EVENDALE COUNCIL RECREATION, FIRE AND POLICE COMMITTEE MEETING

June 3, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.

In attendance were council members John Ranz, Bill Puthoff, Albrinck, and Mayor Don Apking.  Also in attendance were Recreation Director David Nichols, Fire Chief Mike Hauck, Police Chief Niel Korte, and Stiney Vonderhaar, resident.

Administration
•       Caren Martin from Horan met with the committee to discuss the various options for health care insurance renewals.  A very spirited discussion followed focused on the ever changing landscape of health care and the associated spiraling costs.  After the discussion, the counsel committee unanimously supported the proposed change to United Health Care under option 2 as presented by Ms. Martin.
Recreation
•       Dave Nichols reminded everybody that the concert is scheduled for Saturday, June 6th, featuring Forever Diamond.

•       Mr. Nichols also reported that the Children’s Theatre presentation of the Jungle Book was a big success with sell outs for several performances.
Fire
•       Ordinance for Contract and Purchase of SCBA from Bid - Fire Chief Hauck informed the committee that the purchase of the SCBA Unit is proceeding and that the lowest and best bid was received from Warren Fire Equipment.  Their bid was $127,158.00, with the majority of that cost to be covered by a FEMA grant.

•       Bike Helmet Sales – Chief Hauck informed the committee that the price for the bike helmets will be increased to $7.00.  This cost is less than the actual cost to the Fire Department and upon review, may result in further increases in the future.

•       Ambulance Update – Chief Hauck is clarifying the specs with Horton and we are still looking at an October delivery date.

•       Root House Training Update – Chief Hauck and the Fire Dept. have been using the Root house in the southern portion of Evendale on Reading Road for training.  They have modified the house to create different fire scenarios.  Chief Hauck expressed his appreciation for allowing the Fire Dept. to continue to train there.
0" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:9pt;color:#000000;">•       Chief Korte presented the Agreement from Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office regarding the delinquent debt collection.  He expressed continued frustration with the ability of his department through Mayor’s Court to collect outstanding fines.  The proposed Agreement will allow any delinquencies to be turned over to the Collection Unit of the Attorney General’s office.  The committee unanimously supported the Agreement and strongly recommends that this be passed by emergency ordinance to avoid unnecessary delay in collections.

•       Chief Korte reported that there was 73 applicants for the open position in the Police Department and that 44 showed up for the physical examination.  Of the 44, 36 passed and they will proceed on to the written test phase of the hiring process.

There will be no further business on motion by Mr. Ranz, seconded by Mr. Puthoff.  The meeting adjourned at 7:15.
